Why Have a Breast Reduction Procedure?
For some women, large breasts have been a concern since shortly after puberty. For others, it is a more recent problem.
There is no denying that life can bring considerable changes to your body. When those changes begin to interfere with your ability to participate in the activities that you love or make you self-conscious when you go to the beach, then it’s time to consider making a change.
This is even more critical when you are experiencing pain and discomfort in your shoulders and back because your breasts are too heavy. Does the ache in your back and shoulders begin in the morning and get worse through the rest of the day?
If so, then it’s time to consult with a plastic surgeon about a Miami breast reduction.
Even if your only complaint is that your bra straps are cutting into your shoulders or that the skin on your breasts is constantly irritated, it’s time to make a change.
You can look and feel better, and you’ll probably be delighted at just how easy it is to make a change. Why shouldn’t you lead your best life?
What Are Breast Reductions?
Sometimes called reduction mammaplasty, a breast reduction surgery is a treatment that is commonly performed on women who are bothered by having breasts that are too large.
During the procedure, glandular tissue, fat and skin may be removed from the breast. It’s possible to reduce the size of the areola, and the result is breasts that are lighter, firmer and smaller than before.
Miami Breast Reduction Surgery
At Prestige Plastic Surgery, we perform dozens of these procedures each year. This gives our patients peace of mind because they know that we have the experience that is necessary to provide them with the best possible care.
Typical breast reductions are performed on an outpatient basis. Only two to three hours generally are required to complete the procedure. The patient is placed under general anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the process.
The majority of these procedures are performed using a short or vertical scar reduction. Accordingly, an incision is placed around each areola and straight down the breast.
Patients who require a more significant removal of tissue and skin may need an anchor-shaped incision that goes around each areola and straight down as well as in the crease that is found under the breast.
With the incision complete, the surgeon proceeds to remove glandular tissue, skin and fat. The areola and nipple are repositioned to suit the new shape and size of each breast.
Optionally, the surgeon may perform liposuction to get rid of any excess fat located in the armpit region. On those procedures where only fat removal is required, the surgeon may exclusively rely on liposuction to perform the breast reduction.
In most cases, the nipples remain attached to all nerves and blood vessels. This ensures that there is little or no sensation loss to the nipples and surrounding tissue. When patients need relief from extremely large breasts, it may be necessary to completely remove the nipples and areolas so that they may be repositioned. This is likely to result in the loss of sensation in the nipples and surrounding tissue.
With the procedure complete, the incisions are closed with stitches, and the patient is brought out of the anesthesia.
Post Breast Reduction Surgery
Some patients will have small tubes inserted into their breasts to allow for the draining of excess fluids. Gauze dressings and a surgical bra are used to protect the breasts.
For a few days or about a week, patients usually experience some pain and discomfort. Your surgeon may prescribe medications to help make you more comfortable during this time. Soon, the bandages and stitches will be removed, though you likely will have to wear a surgical bra for a few weeks until the bruising and swelling subside. You will probably be able to return to work approximately two weeks after your surgery.
During the recovery period, you may experience shooting pains in your breasts or have a loss of sensation in your nipples. Typically, these symptoms fade over a period of about six weeks.
